The decision by House Democrats to open a full-blown impeachment inquiry inspired not only the nation but the writers at Saturday Night Live — coming as it did just days before the SNL season premiere cold open.
A panicked President Trump (Alec Baldwin) is behind his Oval desk, on the phone with Rudy Giuliani (Kate McKinnon), Bill Barr (Aidy Bryant) and finding no relief until he realizes that Mike Pence (Beck Bennett) will make the perfect fall guy. He dials frantically>
“Hey Big Mike, how’s church going? You still waiting for whatshisname to come back?”
Pence looks puzzled. “You mean Jesus, sir?”
The hilarity builds from there with an especially funny bit with Kim Jong-un (Bowen Yang), who advises Trump: “You have a big ocean in your country? Send whistleblower to the bottom of there.”
“I wish my country was as cool as your country,” laments Trump.
Click and cackle. This cold open is truly cold.
